News | 7 alternative ways to access the Book of Mark

April 8, 2010

Listening to the Book of Mark is handy if you are always rushing around, or searching for easier ways to access the Gospel. The Christianity Explored course Study Guide for Mark is now also available in Braille and larger print versions.

Whether it's reading skills, English as a second language, dyslexia, mild visual impairments, or being unable to sit down with a book, many barriers may stop people from spending time with scripture. Here are seven ways to get around these problems (we focus on the Gospel of Mark - the basis of the Christianity Explored course):

1. Internet audio files

To listen to Mark's Gospel at your computer, downloading files from the internet to your PC or Mac means you can start straight away - no need to shop for talking books or wait for mail deliveries. You can find a free audio version from the following internet sites (some sites will also allow you to download MP3 files for your iPod or other portable device):

  • www.audiotreasure.com has MP3 files
  • www.biblegateway.com offers various languages, versions and formats

    2. Explore it together

Don't want to sit at home reading? Got questions you can't answer alone? Christianity Explored is an informal course for people who'd like to investigate Christianity, or just brush up on the basics. Participants explore three questions using the Book of Mark (the shortest of the four gospels): Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus come? And what does Jesus demand of those who want to follow him? 3. Braille and large print study guides

The Christianity Explored course Study Guide for participants is now available in Braille and 24 point giant print from The Torch Trust. Order using the link below or telephone +44 (0)1858 438260. A Braille edition of the Discipleship Explored Study Guide, based on the Book of Philippians, is also in development.

    4. Accessible English study guides

The Christianity Explored course English Made Easy Study Guide features eight illustrated Bible studies in Mark's Gospel. These are intended for international students or those for whom English is a second language (link below). The studies can be used just as easily 'one-to-one' as in small groups, and the Study Guide For Leaders contains training material on teaching Mark faithfully, leading studies effectively, and crossing cultural barriers.

    5. Screen readers

Screen reading software will read out Mark's Gospel straight from the web, and allow you to search the internet for other versions too:

  • Download Screenreader.net's free Thunder software for Windows 7, Vista or XP
  • BBC's My Web My Way guide to talking browsers

    6. Large print Bibles

The Good Book Company delivers giant and large print NIV Bibles worldwide if you prefer the printed word (links below).

    7. Just Mark's Gospel

You can buy a single copy of the Christianity Explored themed Mark's Gospel for £1 or a pack of 20 gospels for £15 (that's only 75p each). This edition from the Good Book Company features an introduction, reading plan and "what next?" sections. Its convenient size and contemporary design makes it ideal for giving away at evangelistic events and for use on courses (link below).
